Vegan Caramel Steamer

Jump to Recipe

Get cozy with this vegan caramel steamer, a recipe you can easily make at home! Refined sugar-free, oil-free, and whole food plant-based and suitable for the whole family.

A grey cup fillled with steamed milk with caramel swirled on top.

A wonderful hot drink for any time of day, this steamed milk is dessert in a cup without being over-the-top sweet. While I do love the coffee version for a morning treat, I usually reach for this soothing steamer when I need a mid-day break or when I'm winding down in the evenings. I love how quick and easy it is to make when I just want a little something sweet.

Ingredients and variations

The ingredients needed to make this caramel steamer are simple.

Unsweetened plant-based milk: You could try whichever milk you like the most and see what you think. I prefer oat milk, which creates a nice creaminess without adding excess flavor. I find soy, almond, and other milks tend to alter the flavor too much. Unsweetened is important so that the steamed milk doesn't end up overly sweet - at least, that's the way I prefer it - you do you. A nice option could be an unsweetened vanilla type of milk to add flavor that goes well with the caramel.

5 Minute Drizzly Vegan Caramel: You just need unsweetened plant milk, nut butter (almond is great), and date or maple syrup for this quick & easy recipe. 1-3 tablespoons should do it per one-cup serving, depending on how sweet you like it. The recipe nutrition figures are based on two.

Pinch of Salt (optional): This steamer is delicious without added salt; that said, a tiny pinch of quality salt can enhance the caramel flavor. If I add salt, I like using pink or a flake salt - it's nice with a smoked flake salt.

Let's make a vegan caramel steamer

Add the caramel to your unsweetened plant-based milk. You can do this directly in the cup, unless you'll be heating it on the stove.

Heat/steam and froth the milk. If you don't have a frother that warms your milk, heat the milk first on the stove or in the microwave. Then froth or skip the frothing.

Drizzle more caramel on top, if desired. Keep in mind that if you skipped the frothing, the caramel will likely sink instead of sitting on top.

Add the caramel, then heat/steam and froth the milk.

Drizzle more caramel on top, or leave it as is! It's delicious either way.
